My childhood nightmares were TRUE

Annie found this truly terrifying basement. Yes, that's a basement. To be fair, the listing does say that there's a "BASEMENT FULL OF WATER." And look -- there it is! So we'll have to find something else to pick on... like... um... this!

No, never mind, the listing also says that "BASKET BALL COURT FL NEEDS TO BE REPLACED."

Wait.

What?

Basketball court?

What kind of a house is this? Let's look at the Google street view:

Huh.

OMFG. Nightmares, you really weren't kidding. I just asked my boyfriend if he wanted to see a house that REALLY makes you wonder "What the EFF happened here?!" and then when he said no I told him he had to look anyway. HOW DOES THAT HAPPEN?? Ugh.

That's just wrong...who leaves a basement like that??? What realtor lists property with a basement like that???

That price shocked me, too. A little bit of nosiness reveals that house was bought for twice that just a few years ago -- but still!

It looks sort of Frank Lloyd Wright-ish, which probably explains the price. But...

That's not a house, that's a DEATH TRAP! No one will ever be able to rid that structure of mold, and I'll bet I know why it's being sold after just two years... I would put money on the owners having recurrent ("unexplained") sickness.

It happened to a local architect in our town. His wife kept getting sick, developed allergies and sensitivities to all kinds of things, and could never really feel well.

Turns out the furnace was installed wrong and the ducts were full of mold. That house has been on the market again (after they sold it).

how can we assume that the basement full of water is not an indoor swimming pool for roaches? Give the roaches some cred!

your blog is my guilty pleasure....keep up the great stuff!

how do you know it's not an indoor pool in general, not just roaches. Maybe the lighting is poor and the water is actually crystal clear or maybe a deep lagoon blue.

HAha! I love in the house description it lists: Bathroom in Basement.

Then under Basement Description it has this:
Basement
- Full
- Finished

hehehe I love it!

"some" mold?? Geez... every picture has mold in it! The house needs to be torn down... no one will be able to live in it!

My favorite thing in this listing is the "Water Source: Lake Michigan."
And it's not just nearby - it's in the basement, too!

that is officially the scariest thing I've ever seen - do they mention that in order to tour the house "BYOHMS" (bring your own haz mat suit)

$679K for mold and a basement even mosquitos would be afraid to breed in? There's no way this house sells. Ever! Not even to a developer who wants to put up a strip mall!

I think whatever lives in the basement is trying to escape by coming up through the basketball court floor.

Ah, it brings back memories of rafting in our basement growing up after it flooded. Good times.

Wait, never mind, it's okay -- I just noticed it comes with a sump pump.

They do say there's an indoor swimming pool. I think it needs a new filter, though.

$679,000??? For that? If it were in good shape, how much would it cost - $10 Million?

I see under "equipment" they list "humidifier", which might be unneeded. They also list "sump pump", which I guess isn't working so well.

As Bette Davis would say: "What a dump!"

Oh - Man - That is nasty..

If you own a house worth $679,000 how can you not afford to keep up on it? I just can't believe the listings you guys find.

Yikes! Who would buy that?! And what exactly is the .2 in 5.2 bathrooms?

I am a meteorologist, so I look at this and wonder, are these flood waters? But then, it seems they aren't receeding, because if they were, they would have been smart enough to not list the house until after the water is gone...right? I have so many questions.

The house could possibly be livable again, depending on the damage. Think Hurricane Katrina...my friends had 5 feet of water in their house. They tore everything out down to the studs and subfloor, scrubbed everything that remained with bleach over and over and over again, and rebuilt.

But back to this house...this price...oh, my. Unreal!

it would probably cost $700,000 to fix it up!

i get all stuffed up and sick feeling just looking at all the mold.

Awww Karen, You are not a member of our local MLS. 5.2 baths means there are 5 full baths and 2 half baths.

wow, i just seen a house a house that suffered that same fate last week. The guy had it drained and called us to clean it up.

The damage wasnt as bad as this though, less than 10k in this case.

It happens often in foreclosed homes with the power shut off though. no power for a sump pump in a basement can spell disaster for some homes.
